Philosophy in Art
Seishin Geinojin
The emotions, feelings, and unnamed things that are depicted in those paintings are unnameable : fear or joy, anger or happiness, hot or cold doesn’t exist. These paintings use the same path as emotions, feelings, and strange events, but do not attempt to explain them or put any meaning. Therefore, they belong more to the 3rd and 4th poetica : expression and art for the sake of art. This is because the paintings uses the same language path as emotions to express themselves but do not attempt to represent them.
The irrational painting could be understood by everyone because all living being have been first raised up by irrationality.
« You can only create when you empty yourself : by non thinking. »
[Krishnamurti]
Irrationality makes the power of the painting. Irrationnality is the opposite of rationality. It’s when you don’t think. It is so powerful that paintings become a living being filling the surrounding space with his presence. “It isn’t negative nor positive, irrationality doesn’t know the difference. On the contrary, thinking knows and it’s dependent of another source like the past. Therefore it’s weak” [Krishnamurti].
Although to express itself, paintings remains dependent of the rational side like the size of the canvas, the color and the depth of the brushstrokes. Rationality determines how the painting can express itself. As rational part, the materiality is an important part of the painting. Like the brushstrokes, the colors and the size of the canvas, it makes the unseekable vibrations happen and so the irrationality to express itself. This is why the materiality and the conflicts that occur between colors, forms and matter are important as well.
